The region of Porteis Du Soleil is one of the areas with the largest number of mountain bike trails in Europe. One of the most magnificent and challenging trails which the region is know for, is Col De Bassachuax. This challenging, yet rewarding trail is located 7 KM from Morzine and only 4 KM from Avoriaz. This trail is unique thanks to the styles of bike riding and scenery which it combines. The trail begins in an altitude of 1025 meters. By the end of the trail, after 17 KM, you’ll find yourself at the height of 1783 meters – a total climb of 758 meters. I can assure you that you’ll feel plenty of satisfactions once you’ll reach the summit. The view from the top of the trail is spectacular. The whole valley of Dranse and the lake of Montriond span below you. The trail of Col de Bassachaux combines technical and physical challenges along with spectacular alpine views.

Due to the trail’s high altitude, the time for taking up the challenge of riding it should be at the peak of the summer. In most years it takes a couple of months into spring until the snow clears up from the trail, therefore, I recommend riding up this trail in August.

The climb is not easy and quite physical, yet at the same time very rewarding in its beauty. Any point is a wonderful point to take a break. The spectacular view will accompany you most of the way up. Make sure to bring enough water – you’ll need it.

After a day of riding up one of the most beautiful hills in the French Alps I’m sure you’ll feel happy and very satisfied. Don’t forget to bring along your camera!

Chatel Bike Park

The town of Chatel is situated 10 Km northeast of Morzine, close to the Swiss border. The town of Chatel is a center for Downhill mountain bike riders thanks to the many downhill trails which descend from the steep slopes of the mountains adjacent to Chatel. One of the main attractions of Chatel is the Chatel bike park. The park is located halfway between Morzine and Chatelcl and offers a wide range of downhill and single tracks, in addition to some challenging technical trails.

In addition to the conventional bike tracks which it offers, Chatel Bike Park offers a unique biking experience, by riding through an adventurous technical bike obstacle course which includes gaps, drops and many other exciting challenges you will definitely enjoy and remember until your next visit to the French Alps.

Enjoy an adrenalin-full ride down hill through a forest, while most of the ride you will find yourself riding on a wooden platform as wide as a single track.

In order to reach the park there is a free bus service from the town of Chatel and at times, from Morzine too. Bikers are allowed to load their bikes on the bus, which makes this service very comfortable and handy. There is plenty of room for bikes on the bus since its half opened.

Its important to consult a biking guide before setting out to the trails of the park, in order to make sure you’re fit riding the trail of you’re choice. In any case don’t forget to bring along the sufficient protection accessories, especially if you’re planning to take on the more challenging trails.

Chatel Bike Park is considered one of the area unique attractions – I highly recommend adding at least one or two trails of the park to your trip’s itinerary.
