Night mountain biking
You’re not mistaken – that is the title of this article. You might think I’m crazy at first, that’s what I thought of the first person who mentioned Night Mountain biking to me. My first reaction was – "it’s too dangerous… why would I want to se out on my bike at night any way?" My second thought was: "why not?"
Apparently, all over the world there are many people who had that same second thought and developed the field of night mountain biking into a well known discipline of mountain biking.
The night outdoors has its own special magic. The combination of the darkness, quiet and the stars make the outdoors a special place to be at night. That magic reflects on mountain biking in the dark as well. You’ll find that even if you’re an experienced mountain bike rider in light hours, you’ll go back to being a beginner in the dark. All obstacles seem to be much harder to pass at night. Additionally, objects that don’t seem to us as objects during the day, such as gates, trees and animals are obstacles at night.
In order to come back in one piece after enjoying a bike ride through the magic of the night, here are some guidelines that are important to follow:
- Try to ride on clear, full moon nights: you’ll be surprised at the brightness of the light reflected from the moon.
- Be sure to bring along warm clothes. In any area, especially in areas such as Morzine, nights are quite cold. Bring along an additional set of clothes to switch to after building up a sweat. Riding wet clothes will make your body temperature drop even more.
- Double check your lights and reflectors before setting out.
Mountain biking at night can be an enjoyable and exciting experience. It’s important to realize that this is a new style of riding that requires lowering your pace.
