Morzine – A Bit Of History
We all know that Morzine is one of the most beautiful and challenging areas to ride downhill and single track bike paths. There is no doubt about it that Morzine is a world known area. I’m sure that most of us don’t know much about Morzine besides of it being a spectacular arena for vacations. In order to enrich our knowledge about Morzine, I’ve brought together some historical facts that you might be interested in.
Morzine is located in the French Alps, half way between Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc. In past years, Morzine used to be a farming and slate mining village. Morzine’s recorded history begins in the year 1090, when monks came and took control of the area. After 500 years, Morzine achieves it’s independence from the monks. By the 19th century, thanks to the large slate reserve found in the area, Morzine became a mining center. By the middle of the 19th century, a road that allows access to Morzine is completed. The amazing potential of skiing and biking in Morzine came into use by the beginning of the 20th century. In 1910 the first ski club opened in Morzine and in 1920 the first hotel opened. Over the years since, Morzine has developed into a touring and sporting center. Major sports events took place in Morzine. Although
Morzine has come a long way from being a small farming and mining village, it still has the same magic and a soft, gentle pace of life. It’s rare to find a place such as Morzine, which contains a magical blend of old and new. Any tourist and biker can find a special side of Morzine to connect to, whether it is the challenging downhill trails or the picturesque single track trails.
