Mountain Biking - Getting To the Top
The French Alps and the bike trails of Morzine are known for their steep slopes and down hill trails. Although most of the trails are down hill, there are plenty of trails that have parts that are on a incline. Here are some useful tips to get you up to the top of the hill:
- Concentrate on an object that is relatively close and draw yourself in your mind to it. When reaching that object, find yourself a new object – don’t think about the top of the hill throughout the whole ride. Break the ride into many goals. Reaching the goals on the way will motivate you to continue to the next goal and to the final goal, the top of the hill.
- Pedal efficiently – Some riders feel more comfortable standing, while other prefer sitting. If you stand, it helps to shift your body weight and lean towards the handlebar. It is important to adjust the bike seat to the point that when pedaling your leg straightens. If you feel that the incline is to steep, it’s OK to get off the bike and walk with them for a bit – after all, you’re here to enjoy yourself, not show your ego.
- Efficient Gear shifting – with a proper use of the gears, you can lower the difficulty of the ride. The idea of the lower gears is that they are every turn of the wheel is more powerful, yet turns the wheel less than the higher gears. Basically, the tradeoff is between power and speed. Start off riding the highest gear you feel that you can and gradually lower the gear while riding. Don’t start off riding the lowest gear.
Riding up an incline is certainly hard and some would even discouraging .On the other hand, I don’t remember feeling such satisfaction as I did after finishing a long ride up a steep incline.
