The Pros and Cons of Cycling with GPS
In the past few years, the use of GPS has spread to many areas. In the past, GPS devices were very bulky and expensive. Today, one can find very small and very sophisticated GPS devices in a wide variety of prices that can suit most bike riders.
A few questions arise following the expanding use of GPS devices – do you really need a GPS device for bike riding? Does the use of GPS enhance your riding enjoyment, or perhaps does the fact that you don’t have to figure out yourself where you are, take something away from the challenge of navigating?
In the next few paragraphs I’ll try to illustrate a few of the pros and cons of the use of GPS while bike riding.
There is no argument that GPS provides you with important and helpful information. By using a GPS device you can always know where you are. The Different GPS devices vary in their functions that they provide, yet most devices offer much more information than just where you are. You can usually see your planned route on a map and other important information. The most important benefit of using GPS while riding is peace of mind. With using GPS it is extremely hard to get lost. This fact is important for riders who ride in new and unfamiliar areas, such as in Morzine and the magnificent bike trails of the French Alps.
In my opinion, before installing a GPS on your handlebar you should think about what you are missing. For bikers who enjoy finding their way themselves, the GPS takes away a major part of the riding experience.
One way to combine adventure and security measures is to take along a GPS device in your backpack without turning it on (just in case of getting lost).
In conclusion, the decision of bike riding with or without GPS depends on what kind of rider you are and what part of biking you enjoy.
